DenturesWe sometimes refer to our teeth by expressions such as "the ivories," "pearly whites," "choppers," or "fangs." Whatever you want to call the teeth that break through the gums of the mouth at the age of six months and continue growing throughout one’s life, it is crucial to give teeth the proper oral hygiene care they need. However, people do not always provide the proper level of care and end up in need of dentures as an adult.

What You Need To Know About Dentures

A Crucial Role

The teeth are crucial for a variety of functions including eating, speaking, maintaining facial structure and promoting proper digestion. Last, but not least in importance, is the feeling of confidence a smile provides when people interact with others. There are multiple ways in which people can lose teeth from tooth decay to something knocking a tooth out during an accident.

Without teeth, many everyday functions become incredibly difficult. Dentures are an effective way to replace missing or damaged teeth. Contrary to popular belief, there are different forms of dentures that people can choose depending on their situation. For example, someone may only be missing a few teeth and not require a full set of dentures. In other cases, someone may need dentures immediately and not have time to wait.

No matter the reason, here are a few potential denture options:

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are usually conventional or immediate. Complete dentures are a full set of teeth to replace an edentulous mouth when a professional remove the few remaining teeth or the teeth fall out.  The conventional full mouth denture can be put in place eight to twelve weeks after removal of natural teeth.

Immediate Dentures

These teeth are made in advance and can be placed as soon as the natural teeth are removed. The advantage to immediate dentures is that the person does not need to go without teeth even as the gum tissue is healing. The disadvantage is that of more visits to the gums and tissue in mouth heal for adjustments to ensure a proper fit.

Immediate dentures are a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made for the mouth.

Partial Dentures

When some natural teeth can remain in the mouth, then partial dentures might be recommended to bridge the gap of missing teeth.  In fact, that is what partial dentures are: a bridge. It consists of a pink or gum-colored base and sometimes connected to a metal framework that holds the bridge in place in the mouth.

Partial dentures are a type of bridge that one will need to remove for cleaning. There is a fixed bridge that we cement in place to crowns that on either side of the gap of where there were teeth. This fixed bridge prevents natural teeth from shifting position. There is also a precision partial denture removable with internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to adjacent crowns providing a natural appearance.
