Reasons for a loose tooth
One of the main reasons an adult would have a loose tooth is because they are experiencing bone loss. This is more often than not due to advanced periodontal disease, which can be avoided by making regular trips to the dental office. Other reasons an adult will have a loose tooth is because they bit down too hard on something, causing trauma to the tooth. A direct hit to the face can also make for a tooth loose.
The main reason a child would have a loose tooth is because it is moving out of the way to make room for the permanent tooth that is right behind it. What an exciting time!
5 tips for a loose tooth
For adults who currently have a loose tooth, be sure not to pull the tooth out. If it does happen to come out, rinse using water or milk and put it back into the empty socket until the dentist is able to look at it.
The following five tips are for children who currently have a loose tooth.
1. Let them know why their tooth is loose; permanent teeth are coming in!
2. Let them know it could take up to a few weeks for the tooth to fall all the way out.
3. Encourage them to wiggle it around, which will help loosen the bond between the root and the tooth.
4. Ask them to let you know if they are experiencing any pain or swelling, which could be a sign of trouble, requiring a quick trip to the dentist office.
5. If the tooth falls out, have them rinse their mouth out if there is any bleeding, which should be minimal.
